Trouble Sleeping? It Could be Restless Leg Syndrome

More and more people it seems are having trouble getting a good night’s sleep, and this lack of sleep can have many serious daytime effects. From trouble at work to trouble on the road, there are many reasons why any sleep problem needs to be addressed and solved. Of course a big part of solving the problem is finding the right diagnosis, and for that reason it is important for those having trouble falling and staying asleep to consider the possibility of restless leg syndrome.

Restless leg syndrome, or RLS, is a serious problem, and one that causes many problems for those who suffer from it. Those suffering from restless leg syndrome often suffer from burning sensations and other discomfort in their legs. These burning sensations often cause an uncontrollable urge to move, and this can of course interfere with a good night’s sleep.

At times the itching and burning sensations can become so unbearable that the sufferer can think of nothing but those sensations and getting relief. Often walking around the house, or moving the legs, can relieve the symptoms, but the bad news is that these symptoms are often worse at night, making it even more difficult to sleep.

The exact cause of restless leg syndrome is still the subject of research, but there does appear to be a genetic component to the disorder. In addition, the brain chemicals known as dopamine and serotonin are thought to play a role, and scientists are hard at work on medicines to control and treat RLS.

In the meantime there are a number of prescription medications that doctors use to treat restless leg symptoms in their patients, and those who suffer may want to discuss their symptoms with their doctor to determine the best course of treatment. Lifestyle changes can also have a positive effect for some RLS sufferers, and things like increasing exercise and reducing caffeine consumption may be able to make an impact. In addition to prescription medications and lifestyle changes there are also a number of herbal remedies on the market that promise to put RLS to bed once and for all. It is important for every RLS sufferer to determine which treatment will be most effective.
